Gurkha Expeditions was founded by Prem Tamang, a professional trekking guide with more than two decades of hands-on experience leading groups across Nepal’s Himalayas.
Between 2001 and 2019, Prem worked closely with British Military trekking teams, supporting and guiding them on demanding high-altitude routes throughout Nepal. Those years shaped his approach to trekking, with a strong focus on preparation, safety discipline and clear decision-making in the mountains.
After nearly twenty years of guiding experience, he founded Gurkha Expeditions in 2022 with a simple goal, to offer safe, honest, and well-organized trekking experiences led by people who truly understand the Himalayas.
Gurkha Expeditions operates with a small, experienced team, focusing on quality guiding, realistic planning, and respect for both clients and local communities.
About the Founder

Prem Tamang (Man Singh Tamang)
Founder and Lead Guide, Gurkha Expeditions
Prem Tamang began his trekking career in 1997 as a porter, working his way up through years of practical mountain experience. In 2001, he became a licensed trekking guide and started leading international trekking groups across Nepal.
From 2001 to 2019, Prem worked closely with British Military trekking teams, supporting and guiding them on demanding high-altitude routes across Nepal. During this time, he helped lead more than 80 British Army groups through remote mountain terrain.
Those years shaped his approach to guiding, with a strong emphasis on careful route planning, acclimatization, steady decision-making, and team leadership in challenging conditions.
The decision to start Gurkha Expeditions came after years of guiding in challenging terrain and changing conditions. He wanted to build a company shaped by firsthand experience, steady decision-making and long-term responsibility in the mountains.
Today, Prem continues to guide selected treks and remains directly involved in trip planning and guide preparation at Gurkha Expeditions. He makes sure routes, pacing and safety are thought through properly before you head into any trek.
