The Department of Immigration in Nepal has introduced updated provisions that now allow solo foreign trekkers to obtain permits for solo trekking in Nepal’s restricted areas. This change aims to promote tourism and enhance service delivery for independent adventurers.
Streamlined Permit Application Process: Solo Trekking in Nepal
According to a public notice issued by the department, foreign nationals planning to trek in designated restricted zones across 13 districts must secure their trekking permits directly through the Department of Immigration. To simplify and expedite this process, the permit issuance system has been revamped into an online platform, making it more accessible and user-friendly.
Previously, permits for restricted areas were only granted to groups, forcing solo trekkers to find companions to proceed. After feedback from the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and other tourism stakeholders highlighted the inconvenience and the negative impact on tourism promotion, the department decided on March 22 to permit individual trekkers to apply independently.
The updated regulations cover restricted zones in 13 districts, from the East Kanchenjunga Base Camp to the West Limi Valley in Humla. It covers the Manaslu and Tsum Valley areas of Gorkha, the Nar and Phu valleys of Manang, Upper Mustang in Mustang, and both Upper and Lower Dolpa in Dolpa, among others.
Mandatory Guide and Registered Agency Requirements
Despite this new allowance for solo trekking permits, all applicants, including solo trekkers, must apply through a registered trekking agency and be accompanied by a licensed trekking guide throughout their journey. The responsible agency assumes full liability for emergency rescue operations, while all other regulations remain governed by existing laws. To enhance safety and improve monitoring in these sensitive restricted areas, the department has also imposed a maximum limit of seven trekkers per guide within a group.
Visa and Technical Support Enhancements
Further reforms include a requirement for trekkers to provide a valid Nepal visa number at the time of permit application. To facilitate advance planning, foreign trekkers can now use their visa application number (submission ID) from their home country when applying. Additionally, the department has established a dedicated helpline (+977-9761423636) to assist applicants experiencing technical issues with the online permit system.
Anticipated Benefits
The Department of Immigration expects these new measures to bolster tourism promotion, create more employment opportunities, improve the safety of trekkers, and streamline overall trekking management in Nepal.
